Every April, Thailand comes alive with Songkran – the Thai New Year and one of the most vibrant and meaningful celebrations in Thai culture. While many know it for the exciting water festivals that flood the streets, Songkran is deeply rooted in traditions that focus on renewal, gratitude, and community. This year, Simply Asia is embracing the spirit of Songkran by celebrating Thai culture and partnering with the incredible South African charity, Gift of the Givers, to give back in a meaningful way to communities in South Africa. A percentage of sales during our Songkran competition will be donated to Gift Of The Givers.
What is Songkran?
Songkran, celebrated from the 13th to the 15th of April, marks the traditional Thai New Year. Songkran isn’t just a public holiday – it’s a time for families to reunite, reflect on the past year, and welcome new beginnings.
While the festival is famous for its lively water splashing – symbolising the washing away of misfortunes – Songkran is deeply spiritual and community-oriented. Many people visit temples to make merit, offer food to monks, and pour fragrant water over Buddha statues as a sign of respect and cleansing. Families come together to pour water over the hands of elders, seeking their blessings for the year ahead. Communities engage in cleaning their homes and public spaces, reflecting the spirit of renewal and starting the new year with a fresh outlook.
The water festivals represent purification, joy, and unity – bringing people together across all ages and backgrounds.
