Sawasdee!
We’re Thinking Thai and encourage you to as well, so here’s a bit of help…
Muay Thai, or more commonly known as Thai kickboxing, is a martial art that some say dates back over 1000 years. It is a fast and brutal combat sport with a rich history in Thai culture. So much so that on the 17th of March each year in Thailand, the entire country celebrates Boxer’s Day, which commemorates a brave kickboxer from the mid 1700s. This shows us just how important the sport is to Thailand, we don’t even have a Soccer Day, Rugby Day or Cricket Day in South Africa!
Known as the Art of Eight Limbs, because fighters can use eight points of contact (punches, kicks, elbows and knees), Muay Thai is one of the most exciting martial arts to watch. It also allows grappling, unlike Western boxing, which results in fights with much more varied action and outcomes. With the best fighters able to place kicks to the head of their opponent with pinpoint accuracy, it truly is an art, albeit one that can leave your opponent swollen and bloodied.
It is interesting to note that Muay Thai practitioners land many of their kicks with their shins, and in order to strengthen the bones they spend long hours repeatedly kicking hard objects with their shins. Over time, this causes the shine bones to harden and strengthen, allowing harder kicks to be dealt. Not something we would recommend you try at home, unless of course you plan on becoming the next Muay Thai champion.
While our Thai chefs aren’t required to be Muay Thai practitioners, they are required to be legends in the kitchen so we can assure you that you receive the best flavours of Thailand in South Africa.
