Songkran, the Thai New Year, is a celebration of new beginnings and goodwill towards others. The happy people of Thailand celebrate this festive occasion by pouring scented water over one another to symbolize a fresh start, leaving food in front of temples for the monks and doing other good deeds to give back to the community.
Celebrated from the 13th to the 15th of April every year, Songkran originally took place as a solemn remembrance of the year past, complete with water to wash away the sins of the prior year; it has changed just a little bit in the intervening years. In true Thai fashion, this has become nothing short of one of the biggest parties of the year.
Songkran is one of the world’s biggest water fights. All across the country, locals and some of the more adventurous travelers prepare themselves for the fight of their lives, stocking up on water pistols and preparing for battles to come. The jury is still out as to whether being entirely drenched with water is better at washing away your sins, but it seems to work either way.
And in the Songkran spirit of giving , we have partnered with The Lunchbox Fund to help feed hungry children across the country. For every Songkran Special sold, we will donate R2.50 to The Lunchbox Fund, which is all it costs to feed a hungry child a hot meal at school.
From 13 April until 13 May 2015 (Mondays to Wednesdays only) we are running a Songkran Special. Visit your nearest Simply Asia store, sit-down and order any noodle dish (dishes ranging from 504 – 536 – chicken only) and get a second noodle dish absolutely free*. If you’re in a hurry, don’t worry, because take-away customers also benefit with our Songkran Special….just not as much as our sit-down customers do.
